Buffalo Paddock

Buffalo, also known as bison, are the largest land animals in North America and have become a symbol of the American Plains. Since 1892, buffalo have been kept in the Buffalo Paddock in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco in order to preserve this then endangered species. The first herd, brought in from Wyoming, unfortunately died of tuburculosis and needed to be replaced. Since then, they have done quite well here.
