California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences is one of the 10 largest natural history museums in the world. It is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It includes the Morrison Planetarium and the Steinhart Aquarium. Permanent exhibits inside the museum include the following:
- African Hall: This wing features realistic models of animals from the African jungles and savannahs, such as ghiraffes and zebras, in lifelike dioramas. These displays also feature changing lifelike light and sounds, compressing a day into a 20-minute cycle.
- Earthquake!: This exciting exhibit allows visitors to experience realistic tremors and learn about their destructive power.
- Elkus Collection of Native American Art: This wing features a supurb display of native Navajo and Pueblo art.
- Gem and Mineral Hall: This wing features over 1000 specimens of valuable gemstones and minerals, including a 1350-pound (612-kg) quartz crystal from Arkansas. A special exhibit shows how gemstones are made into jewelry.
- Life Through Time: This exhibit features skeletons of various extinct dinosaurs and birds including Quetzalcoatlus, the largest flying creature that ever lived.
- Wild California: This wing features dioramas of California landscapes and wild animals along with audio recordings.
Unfortunately, the museum is closed for renovation until 2008, including the Morrison Planetarium and the Steinhart Aquarium. Meanwhile, its exhibits are on display at a temporary location on Howard Street downtown.
