City Hall

City Hall is a highly impressive Baroque building. It was designed by architect Arthur Brown and built in 1915, just in time for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. The dome was modeled after that of Les Invalides in Paris, built in 1679. With a height of 307.5 feet (94 m), the dome is higher than that of the US Capitol. The building spans 500,000 square feet (46,000 sq. m.) and two city blocks, from McAllister to Grove Street and from Van Ness Avenue to Polk Street. A former City Hall in the same location was completely destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
City Hall has been featured in many films, including the following:
- Dirty Harry (1971)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
- A View to a Kill (1985)
- The Rock (1996)
