Conservatory of Flowers

The Conservatory of Flowers is a magnificent botanical greenhouse in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Built in 1878, it is the oldest building in the park. The conservatory was modeled after a similar one in London's Kew Gardens. In 1971, it was designated as a National Historic Park. The conservatory features a wide variety of plants, including ferns, palms, and orchids.
The building contains 16,800 window panes and the dome weighs 16.0 tons (14.5 tonnes). The frame is made of wood, not iron, and has thus caught fire several times, particularly early on. Remarkably, the building sustained little damage from the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906. In 1995, a hurricane largely destroyed the conservatory, but San Franciscans campaigned for its repair and it was reopened in 2003.
