Davies Symphony Hall

Davies Symphony Hall was built in 1980 at a cost of $28 million to give the San Francisco Symphony a permanent home. It is located in the Civic Center on the corner of Van Ness Avenue and Grove Street. The building is the concert component of the San Francisco War Memorial and Permorming Arts Center. The 1973 Henry Moore
sculpture Four Piece Reclining Figure is situated just outside the building at the street corner.
The symphony hall is just as impressive inside as outside. A "cloud" of movable acrylic reflecting panels over the stage enhance the acoustics. However, the acoustics were less than ideal, so a $10 million renovation project was done in 1992 to provide improved sound as well as additional seating. The currenty seating capacity is 2,743.
An immense pipe organ, in fact the largest concert hall organ in North America, was added in 1984. The organ contains 9,235 pipes and an elaborate programmable console.
