Ferry Building

Built from 1896 to 1903, the Ferry Building is one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco and one of the few which survived the Great Fire following the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The clock tower is 235 feet (71 m) tall. In the early 1930s, prior to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge, over 50 million passengers a year used the Ferry Building to board ferries. 170 ferries a day used to run. Since 1936, most of the ferries stopped running but a few stil run, including ferries to Tiburon and Sausalito in Marin County as well as to Oakland in the East Bay. The ferry building now houses several shops and restaurants.
