Fort Mason

fort mason

Fort Mason is a former US Army post located along the Marina of San Francisco. The fort was originally built in 1863, where it served as an Army post for over 100 years. During the 1960s, most of its operations shifted to the Oakland Army Terminal. During the 1970s, the National Park Service took over its operations and incorporated it into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), whose headquarters are also located in Fort Mason.

Today, while some of the housing still belongs to the Army, much of it has been rented to the public. The Fort Mason Center now boasts some beautiful parks and gardens as well as hosting some three dozen non-profit organizations including three museums and six theaters. Each year the center hosts some 15,000 events, attracting 1.5 million visitors.
