Ghirardelli Square

Ghirardelli Square was once the site of a chocolate factory and woolen mill dating from 1852. Today it is a bustling shopping center and tourist attraction, featuring many shops and restaurants, inclduing the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop, which features world famous ice cream sundaes. The original chocolate factory is on display within the shop.
History
- In 1852, Domingo Ghirardelli began operating his chocolate factory.
- In 1893, Ghirardelli bough the city block, making it the headquarters for the Ghirardelii Chocolate Company.
- In the early 60s, the Golden Gate Macaroni Company bought the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company and placed the land up for sale.
- In 1962, Willam Roth and his mother bought the square in order to prevent the square from being replaced with an apartment building. Later they hired architect Lawrence Halpern to convert it into a restaurant and retail complex.
- In 1964, Ghirardelli Square opened.
- In 1982, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark.
