Golden Gate Park

golden gate park

Golden Gate Park is one of two large parks in San Francisco, the other being the Presidio. The area of the park is 1.6 square miles (4.1 sq. km.) or 1,017 acres, which is 174 acres larger than Central Park in New York City. The park spans roughly three miles (5 km) east to west and 1/2 mile (0.8 km) north to south. It is bordered by the ocean beach to the west, Stanyan Street to the east, Fulton Street to the north and Lincoln Way to the south. Since it was built in the 1870s, it has remained one of the most popular features of the city.

With 13 million annual visitors, Golden Gate Park is the third most visited park in the United States, after Central Park in NYC and Lincoln Park in Chicago. Major features in the park include the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young Museum, the Califorina Academy of Sciences, the Conservatory of Flowers, the Buffalo Paddock, the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, the Shakespeare Garden, Stow Lake, Spreckels Lake, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the Music Concourse, the AIDS Memorial Grove and John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive.

On Sundays, several roads through the park are closed to cars, allowing bikers and roller skaters to enjoy using them.
