Grant Avenue

Grant Avenue in downtown San Francisco was the first street of Yerba Buena, the precursor to SF. A plaque at 823 Grant Avenue commemorates the first dwelling, a tent erected in 1835.
During the Gold Rush, an estimated 25,000 Chinese settled in the area. In 1885, the street was renamed Grant Avenue in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant.
Most of the buildings on Grant Avenue were built after the 1906 earthquake in the Oriental Renaissance style. Grant Avenue is now the main tourist street of Chinatown.
