Lombard Street

One block of Lombard Street in downtown San Fransicso is known as "the crookedest street in the world". It was built this way in 1922 due to its location on the steep slope of Russian Hill. The 27-degree slope of this hill was considered dangerously steep for most vehicles at the time, so the designers adopted an elaborate switchback design, reducing the slope to a modest 16 degrees. The speed limit on this block is 5 mph (8 km/hr). The crooked drive is roughly 1/4 mile (400 m) long.
Fast car chases down Lombard Street are featured in the films "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" (1965), "The Love Bug" (1969), and "What's Up, Doc?" (1972). The street has also been featured in numerous TV commercials.
