Mission Dolores

mission dolores

Built in 1776, Mission San Francisco de Asis, more commonly known as Mission Dolores, is the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco. It is also the sixth oldest mission in California. The mission was founded by Father Francisco Palou and Lt. Jose Juaquin Moraga, part of the de Anza Expedition, which was devoted to bringing Spanish settlers to Northern California.

The mission is still an active church. In addition, it contains an impressived gilded and painted altarpiece imported from Mexico in 1780, a vast cemetary, a museum and a gift shop.
