Nob Hill

nob hill

Nob Hill is the highest hill in downtown San Francisco. Rising 338 feet (103 m) above sea level, Nob Hill provides some spectacular views of the bay, like the one shown above, looking down Powell Street. Shortly after the cable car lines were built on the hill in the 1870s, many rich citizens built homes on top of the hill, including the "Big Four" railroad barons. Unfortunately, all the mansions on the hill burned down in the Great Fire following the San Francisco Earthquake in 1906 except for that of James Flood, which is now the exclusive Pacific-Union Club. Today, affluent visitors still flock to Nob Hill to enjoy the views from some of the fancy hotels.

Due to its steep slopes, Nob Hill has been used as a locale for several action films involving fast-paced car chases, including Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, and The Rock.
