North Beach

North Beach is a neighborhood in downtown San Francisco. The area is bounded by The Embarcadero to the east, Van Ness Avenue to the west, Beach Street to the north and Broadway Street to the south. Fisherman's Wharf lies due north of North Beach.
North Beach is primarily known for its beat culture stemming from the beatnik poets who moved to the neighborhood during the 1950s. Chief among them were Jack Kerouac, for whom an alley was named, and Dylan Thomas, a regular patron at Vesuvio, a popular beat bar. City Lights is a famous neighborhood bookstore, specializing in beat writing and poetry.
Today, North Beach is a predominantly Italian and Chilean neighborhood and as such, it features many excellent restaurants of these ethnicities.
North Beach features many exciting tourist attractions, including Lombard Street, Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower, the San Francisco Art Institute, the Vallejo Street Stairway, Club Fugazi, the North Beach Museum, Washington Square, Saints Peter and Paul Church, and Levi's Plaza.
