Pacific Heights

Pacific Heights is a ritzy, old, primarily residential neighborhood in San Francisco. It lies in the north-central portion of the city and spans roughly 2 miles (3 km) north to south and east to west. It is bounded to the north by the Marina and to the south by Fell Street. The Civic Center lies at the southeastern corner of the neighborhood. Pacific Heights is built on a hill which rises some 300 feet (90 m) above sea level, providing some spectacular views of the Marina.

The neighborhood was first developed in the 1870s and contains a large number of Victorian houses. Most of the neighborhood was rebuilt after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, however. The neighborhood also has several chateaus and mansions for its wealthier residents as well as consulates to various countries. Among the more impressive mansions are the Haas-Lilienthal House and the Spreckels Mansion.

Fun tourist areas within Pacific Heights include the Japan Center, the Palace of Fine Arts and The Exploratorium, Alta Plaza and Lafayette Park.

Due to its picturesque setting, Pacific Heights has been used as a locale of several well-known films, including the following:

  • Pal Joey (1957)
  • Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)
  • Bullitt (1968)
  • What's Up, Doc? (1972)
  • The Conversation (1974)
  • The Towering Inferno (1974)
  • Foul Play (1978)
  • Pacific Heights (1990)
  • Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
  • The Princess Diaries (2001)
