Palace of Fine Arts and the Exploratorium

palace of fine arts

The Palace of Fine Arts is a spectacular building along the Marina in San Francisco. It was built in 1915 as part of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. The dome is the only remaining one of eight identical domes built for the exposition. The Palace of Fine Arts has long been a popular location for weddings.

The Exhibition Hall, which originally contained impressionist paintings featured during the exhibition, now houses The Exploratorium, a world-renowned hands-on science museum founded in 1969 by Frank Oppenheimer, brother of Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. The Exploratorium features over 650 interactive exhibits on various areas of science, including weather, animal behavior, vision, light and color, heat and temperature, sound and hearing, and electricity. It also features the Tactile Dome, a three-dimensional pitch black maze which visitors must feel their way through.
