Pier 39 was originally one of several dozen cargo piers along The Embarcadero, built in 1905, but in 1978 it was converted into a large two-level shopping and entertainment complex. It was designed to resemble a quaint fishing village. Pier 39 boasts numerous shops as well as amusement park rides and video games. The amusement park has a two-level carousel as well as the Turbo Ride, an exciting roller-coaster simulator. In addition, Pier 39 has numerous street performers and a sensational multimedia show called The San Francisco Experience.
One of the star attractions at Pier 39 is a large group of sea lions, who have made the pier their home since January 1990, shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The number of sea lions varies throughout the year, peaking at up to 900 during the winter. The sea lions at Pier 39 are mostly male. The nearby Marine Mammal Center provides information for visitors on these fascinating sea creatures.
