San Francisco Art Institute

The San Francisco Art Institute was founded in 1871. it was originally housed in the Nob Hill mansion formerly owned by railroad tycoon Mark Hopkins. This mansion burned down in 1906 in the Great Fire following the San Francisco Earthquake. The institute was rebuilt the following year near the Marina and shortly thereafter became affiliated with the Palace of Fine Arts. In 1926, the institute was moved once again to its present location in the North Beach. In 1969, a large extension was added, including a large theater/lecture hall, an outdoor amphitheater, new galleries, and a cafe.
The San Francisco Art Institute has a permanent Diego Rivera gallery, including his 1931 masterpiece Making of a Mural shown above, as well as temporary exhibits by its current artists.
