St. Mary's Cathedral

Located atop Cathdral Hill in Pacific Heights, St. Mary's cathedral is an architectural marvel. Completed in 1971, it is the third church to be situated at this location. The first, known as Old St. Mary's, was built in 1854. This was replaced by a second church in 1891, which burned down in 1962.
The roof is composed of four intersecting paraboloids, mathematical surfaces with interesting geometric properties. The cathedral stands at a height of 200 feet (60 m). The building is made of concrete and has a cross-shaped stained glass window on the roof, representing the four classical elements. Inside the church, a canopy of aluminum rods sparkles over a stone altar.
Cathedral High School (CHS) an all-female private school, was run by St. Mary's cathedral in an adjacent building until 1987, when CHS merged with the all-male private Sacred Heart High School.
