USS Pampanito

The USS Pampanito (SS 383) is an impressive World War II Balao-class diesel-electric submarine which has been preserved as a memorial and a museum since 1975. She is situated at Pier 45 in Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco and is owned and operated by the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park .
The ship is 311.5 feet (95.0 m) long and displaces 2,391 tons (2,169 tonnes) of water when submerged. She was featured in the 1996 comedy film Down Periscope, starring Kelsey Grammer and Rob Schneider.
History
The USS Pampanito was built and commissioned in 1943, during World War II. She served on six war patrols, in which she sank six enemy ships and rescued 73 men. In 1945 she was decommissioned at Mare Island near Vallejo, where she remained until 1960. From 1962 to 1971, she served as a Naval Reserve Training Ship. In 1975, she was brought back to San Francisco and converted into a museum.
