Union Square

Union Square is the central shopping, hotel and theater district of downtown San Francisco. It was named for the big pro-Union rallies held during the Civil War, which helped bring California into
fighting for the Northern cause in the war. A 90-foot (27 m) Corinthean column is situated in the middle of the square, commemorating Admiral Dewey's victory at Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. Today the square is the site of many concerts, protests, and holiday celebrations. A large Christmas tree and menorah are erected in the square during Christmas and Chanukkah respectively.
On the west side of the square lies the majestic Westin St. Francis Hotel. Macy's department store is located on the south side of the square. Other nearby attractions include Saks Fifth Avenue, Nieman-Marcus, the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, the cable car turntable on Powell & Market, a Ticketmaster outlet, The Sony Metreon theater complex, the Theater District, and the Yerba Buena Gardens.
