Aerospace Museum

aerospace museum

Housed within the Balboa Park is the Air and Space Museum (formally the Aerospace Museum). The Aerospace Museum building was designed by the famous industrial designer and architect Charles Dorwin Teague in the art deco architectural style. The Air and Space museum covers nearly five centuries of aviation history and also shows the incredible progress of manned flights.

The Air and Space Museum has a huge mural which shows the progress of transportation throughout the ages and ends in a Hollywood science fiction inspired future. This mural was designed by Juan Larrinaga.

As you approach the San Diego Air and Space Museum, you are greeted by two historically significant military aircrafts, a A-12 Blackbird Spy plane and a Convair Sea Dart. You can marvel at the first manned vehicle to break the bonds of gravity and lift man above earth with the model of the hot air balloon designed by Montgolfier brothers in 1783.

The museum houses the International Aerospace Hall of Fame to honor men and women who have made substantial and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of aerospace sciences. Here you can learn more about the likes of Lindbergh, Montgolfier, Earhart, Gagarin and Armstrong.

In the World War I Gallery, you can see rare exhibits of aircrafts that were used during the World War I while the Golden Age of Flight Gallery introduces you to the dangerous yet entertaining behavior of the barnstormers of the 1920s.

You can admire mint condition aircrafts like Spitfire Mk XVI, Navy F6F Hellcat, and A-4 Skyhawk jet in the mint condition museum. These military aircrafts were used in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

The San Diego Air and Space Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate and is California’s office air and space museum and education center. The museum with its mural, neon exterior lighting, V-9 courtyard fountain is well worth a visit and is quite popular with children who are awed by the numerous exhibits.
