Gaslamp Quarter

gaslamp quarter entrance

The Gaslamp Quarter is located in the heart of downtown San Diego. It is eight blocks long stretching from Broadway to Harbor Drive and two blocks wide running from Fourth Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The Gaslamp Quarter has more than 125 restaurants, coffeehouses and nightclubs. Besides these, there are hundreds of shops and galleries providing the most unique experience.

The Gaslamp Quarter is just across the street from Horton Plaza, the San Diego Convention Center, Petco Park and San Diego’s major business district. The Gaslamp Quarter is a short walk from many of the downtown hotels that are located in the vicinity.

The Gaslamp Quarter underwent a major renovation and redevelopment in 1982 and it was undertaken by the City of San Diego. Many of Victorian buildings in the area were restored and renovated and led to one of the most intensive urban preservation efforts in San Diego. The one time infamous area was transformed into a major tourist attraction.

Today, many new residential buildings have crowded the Gaslamp Quarter. The Gaslamp Quarter Association is working hard to maintain a continuity between modern-day architectural designs and the turn of century designs. Many of Victorian building in the Gaslamp Quarter were built between 1880 and 1910 and they impart the ambience that Gaslamp Quarter is famous for.

A visit to the once seedier areas of San Diego today offers a unique and vibrant atmosphere. The mix of architecture from the turn of the century with modern-day gaslamps, brick sidewalks, galleries, theaters and hundreds of boutiques, shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs has its own flavor which is unique to the Gaslamp Quarter.

Many who visit the Gaslamp Quarter believe that San Diego’s past comes to life in this section and it exists without any problems with modern development and commerce.
