Junipero Serra Museum

The Junipero Serra Museum is located in Presidio Park above the Old Town State Historic Park. The museum was constructed in 1929 in the Mission Revival style to commemorate the site where Father Junipero Serra and Captain Gaspar de Portola established the first mission and fortified settlement in modern-day California.
The Junipero Serra Museum has many artifacts like housewares, tools, furniture and a cannon. All artifacts housed within the museum are from Native American, Spanish, Mexican and American periods through 1929.
Within the Junipero Serra Museum is the Museum Store which offers a good selection of books on early San Diego and California history. There are books for children and adults. The museum and Loggia can also be rented for meetings, weddings and parties.
This is not all. Since the museum is located within the Presidio Park, park rangers lead an outdoor tour on the history of the Park on every second Sunday of the month. The tour takes place from 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm and the tours meet in front of the Junipero Serra Museum and are free of charge.
Admission into the museum is charged. Adults pay $5, seniors and military pay $4 while children aged 6 to 17 are charged $2. Children younger than 6 are admitted free.
The Junipero Serra Museum introduces visitors to the Native American, Spanish and Mexican people who first called this place their home. One can get an insight into the belongings. The museum also houses one of the first paintings brought to California and it managed to survive damage in an Indian attack. The stairs up the towers shows a map mural which shows the hard and difficult journey undertaken by Father Serra when he came to San Diego.
The Junipero Serra Museum was designed by William Templeton in 1929 and it can be seen from miles around. The 70-foot tower of the museum allows visitors to compare the view with the historic photos and gives an idea on how the lay of the land has changed over time.
