A trip to La Jolla is incomplete without a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla. The museum houses a lot of contemporary South American and Latin art.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla is located quite close to the beach and you can see a spectacular and breathtaking view of the ocean from one of the exhibition rooms. The museum also has a beautiful sculpture garden and within this garden there is a sculpture of Ganesha by Nicky de St. Phalle.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla has paintings, drawings, photos and sculptures on exhibits. All works of art in the museum are from 1950 to the present. Take yourself through a self-guided tour of the museum and enjoy the recordings associated with each piece of art. Or you can join a guided tour.

The museum also has café and gift shop where you can purchase videos, cards, posters and art books.

The Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1941 in La Jolla as The Art Center in La Jolla. The museum building was originally the residence of philanthropist Ellen Brown Scripps and it was designed by the famous architect Irving Gill.

In the early 1970s, the name changed to the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art and it started focusing on art from 1950 to the present. In 1996, the Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla underwent a major renovation and expansion program and this was designed by Robert Venturi.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is a must see when you visit La Jolla. Admission fees are quite reasonable; adults $6; seniors $3; while students and children under 12 are admitted free. The first Tuesday and Sunday of each month is free to everyone.
