Salk Institute for Biological Studies

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies was founded by polio vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk, M.D. in 1960. The Institute concentrates on research on neuroscience, and molecular biology and genetics. The basic principal of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies is to improve human health and improve the quality and quantity of food supply of the world.
The land where the Salk Institute for Biological Studies is built was gifted by the San Diego City Council and this decision was approved by the people of San Diego in a special referendum that was held.
Today, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies has 59 faculty investigators who guide the biological research. The Institute also has 850 scientific staff that includes visiting scientists, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
The research and studies done at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies gives new understanding and potential treatments for diseases like cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disorders, birth defects and anomalies of the brain.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies in one the leading research institutions of the world. The institute has trained over 2,000 scientists, many of whom have risen to top positions in other famous and leading research institutes. Five scientists from the Institute have won Nobel prizes for their work and research, and three of the current faculty members are Nobel Laureates.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is quite active in San Diego and it supports a number of programs highlighting the importance of science in middle schools and high schools. The Institute has a joint graduate program with the University of California, San Diego. Each year in February, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies hosts a High School Science Day for 11th and 12th grade students. The Institute has number of other programs, activities and seminars for anyone who is interested in Life Sciences.
