San Diego Museum of Art
The San Diego Museum of Art is one the region’s oldest and largest art museums. The museum is renowned for its fine collection of European, 19th and 20th century American art, Asian art, contemporary art and Latin American art.
Besides this, the San Diego Museum of Art is holds major art exhibitions from around the world and extensively supports cultural and educational programs.
The San Diego Museum of Art was established in 1922 when Appleton S. Bridges, a local business and civic leader, decided to fund the construction of the building to house the growing municipal collection of art. The building that was decided on was the site of the fine arts building during the 1915 Panama-California International Exposition. The construction began in April 1924 and the Fine Arts Society was formed in 1925 when the San Diego Art Guild and the Friends of Art merged. It is the Fine Arts Society that operates the San Diego Museum of Art.
Initially the San Diego Museum of Art concentrated on acquiring American works of art. However, today the museum is famous all over the world for its Spanish baroque paintings and one of the largest collections of Asian Indian paintings outside India. The San Diego Museum of Art also has the works of famous American artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Thomas Eakins. It is estimated that the museum has over 12,000 pieces of arts but at any given time just a small percentage of the works are on display.
In summer 2006, the San Diego Museum of Art had an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s Dream America and it gave a broad overview of Warhol’s career.
