San Diego Museum of Man

The San Diego Museum of Man is located beneath the towering 200-foot California Tower and it is the only museum in the region devoted to anthropology, arts, culture and scientific achievements. The California Tower is a rococo tiled building and it is just inside the park entrance at Cabrillo Bridge.
The San Diego Museum of Man is has permanent collections of rare Egyptian tomb artifacts, Peruvian mummies, and Mayan monuments. The museum lays special emphasis to people of North and South America. Some of the most popular exhibits in the San Diego Museum of Man are life-size replicas of Cro-Magnon, Neanderthal and Peking Man. The museum also has an annex across the street which has more exhibits. The museum has the Children’s Discovery Center and holds many changing exhibits that highlight contemporary cultures and creative expression from across the globe.
Every June, the museum holds an Indian Fair which features American Indians from the Southwest who sell food, arts and crafts and they put up a show of tribal dances. The San Diego Museum of Man also has exhibits focusing on culture and lives of ancient Inuits, Mapuche, Mayans and other Native Indians.
The San Diego Museum of Man was founded in 1915 with the idea to collect and preserve the history and life of mankind. Today the museum offers many educational programs, and the stimulating experience in the museum creates a truly dynamic learning environment for adults and kids alike.
