Timken Museum of Art

timken museum of art

The Timken Museum of Art is considered to be on the best small museums in the country. It houses the renowned Putnam Foundation collection of European old master paintings, Russian icons and American paintings. The museum’s white marble building was designed by Frank Hope Jr., an architect from San Diego, and houses paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Fragonard, Bierstadt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Eastman Johnson and John Singleton Copley.

The Timken Museum of Art is located right next to the San Diego Museum of Art in Plaza de Panama, directly across the Prado. The museum is adjacent to the Botanical Building and for people visiting the Balboa Park in cars, there is a small parking lot directly in front of the Timken Museum of Art.

The exhibition space in the museum is well laid out and even on a weekend afternoon, the Timken is never too crowded. The courteous and helpful staff of the museum is always present to discuss the paintings and answer questions.

In 1951, the Putnam sisters, Anne R. and Amy Putnam, along with the assistance of their longtime friend and advisor Walter Ames established the Putnam Foundation, a nonprofit organization. Under this foundation, Putnam artworks were designated as Putnam Foundation Collection and in early 1960s Ames got the financial support from the Timken family to help build the Timken Museum of Art.

The main attractions of Timken Museum of Art are Rubens’ Portrait of a Young Man in Armor, Rembrandt’s St Bartholomew and Eastman Johnson’s The Cranberry Harvest. There are also one painting each of Bierstadt, Pissarro, Corot and Cézanne. The Timken Museum of Art is an easy introduction to fine art for young children and a copy of the Children’s Gallery Guide can be purchased very cheap from the museum.
