Mendocino was one of the original counties of California and it was created in 1850. The county derived its name from Cape Mendocino, which is believed to have been named in the honor of either the Viceroy of New Spain Antonio de Mendoza or Lorezo Suarez de Mendoza, who was the Viceroy from 1580 to 1583.
