Russian River Valley

russian river

The Russian River Valley is very close to the Pacific Ocean and it is believed that it is this that influences the climate which creates a slow growing environment giving the wines from Russian River Valley their distinctive fruit flavors and high level of acidity. Located on the banks of Russian River, Russian River Valley is considered to be one of California’s most beautiful wine regions and besides wines, you also have the option of camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and golfing.

There are 10,400 acres of vineyards in Russian River Valley which are considered to be ideal for varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. There are around 180 wineries and vineyards in this area and it is a delight to go wine tasting in wineries that range from family owned businesses to elegant estates. Russian River Valley is famous world over for its Pinot Noir but you can also taste outstanding red and white wines.

On the western edge of Russian River Valley is the famous town of Guerneville which is a river resort and popular getaway for the gay and lesbian crowd from San Francisco. You can also visit the Armstrong Woods State Redwoods Reserve and take a walk through the Redwoods. If you are visiting in spring or fall, head to the Bodega Head near Bodega Bay to do some whale watching. You can also drive down to Jenner-by-the-sea and see where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean and from there take a short trip up the coast to Fort Ross which is an old Russian settlement. Fort Ross is now a State Historic Park.

The appellation of Russian River Valley starts north of Healdsburg and stops just short of the California coast. Many wineries offer tours and wine tasting, but the most popular are Korbel, Martin Ray, De Loach and Roshambo. Do not forget to take the Zinfandel from Russian River Valley. The blackberry brambles that grow in this area are responsible for giving the Zinfandels and Pinot Noirs their trademark jammy quality.

There are 50 wineries and 200 wine grape growers in Russian River Valley growing Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Zinfandels amongst others.
