The Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, situated in Denver, Colorado, is a great educational experience for all. It is located in the Five Points neighborhood, the most historically significant neighborhood in Denver. It aims at collecting, housing, interpreting, displaying, exhibiting, and preserving historical documents, artifacts, and memorabilia that illustrate the history and stories of Black men and women who made a significant contribution to the settlement and development of the great American West.
The Museum is housed in the former home of Colorado’s first Black female doctor, Dr. Justina Ford. One floor houses exhibitions on African-American cowboys while the other floor is devoted to military troops such as Buffalo Soldiers. The changing exhibits at the Museum draw attention to topics such as the history of black churches in the West. The Black American West Museum & Heritage Center holds as many as 35,000 artifacts. This huge collection comprises of everything from cowboy boots and photographs to oral histories and old newspapers.
This culturally rich museum was established by Paul Stewart in 1971. The most popular man of interest in the Museum is Bill Pickett. He was the one who invented “bulldogging”, which is now called steer wrestling. The first floor of this Museum is wheelchair accessible. Besides, informational DVD tours are made available to those who are unable to make it upstairs.
