Colorado History Museum

The Colorado History Museum is the flagship of the Colorado Historical Society. Its main aim is to help people explore and understand the state's frontier past. Changing exhibits draw attention to the time from the days before white settlers arrived to the boom periods of mining. On the other hand, the general exhibits mainly focus on the history of the black cowboys in the American West and the growth of historic preservation.

The permanent exhibits at the Museum include old touring cars, Conestoga wagons, etc. The most impressive exhibit is "The Colorado Chronicle 1800-1950." This extraordinary timeline uses biographical plaques and a unique collection of clippings, photographs, paraphernalia, and news to illustrate the history of the state in amazing detail. A number of dioramas highlight important episodes in Colorado’s history, including an obscure re-creation of the 19th century Denver.

Besides, the Museum also features several life-size displays on early industry and transportation. Some of the new exhibits include "Confluence of Cultures" and “Ancient Voices”. These 2 exhibits are dedicated to the state’s Pioneer era and the history of Colorado’s native tribes respectively. The popular mixed media display in the Museum measures 112 feet, 6 inches and bestows 9 inches to each year. This display is packed full with artifacts such as rifles, old daguerreotypes, and land-grant surveys.
The Colorado History Museum is also known for its huge, colorful wall painting of Native Americans, miners, and red rocks. The magnificent brick area outside the front door is complete with a grassy strip and is a great place to relax. The Museum also offers a number of lectures and statewide archaeological and historical tours. Allow at least an hour to tour the entire museum.
