Colorado State Capitol

colorado state capitol at night

The Colorado State Capitol Building, situated in the Civic Center area of Denver, Colorado, houses the Colorado legislature as well as the offices of the Colorado Governor and Lt. Governor. This building, constructed in 1890, resembles the United States Capitol and was designed by Elijah E. Myers. It is made of Colorado white granite and has a distinct gold dome with a plate of real gold. This unique gold dome was added in order to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush.

The main entrance hall of the building is open 180 feet (55 m) to the top of the dome. "One Mile above Sea Level" is engraved on the fifteenth step outside the west entrance to the building. This point offers breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains at sunset. A second mile high marker was installed in the 18th step in 1969. A new one-mile marker was set in the 13th step after more accurate measurements were taken in 2003.

A large amount of Colorado Rose Onyx, a rare rose marble, has been used in the interior of the building. However, white Yule Marble is used for the floors throughout the State Capitol. Several designs, including images of George Washington and Molly Brown, have also been found in the marble. Portraits of every President of the United States are uses to decorate the halls while people or events related to the history of Colorado are depicted by the stained glass windows.

The gilded dome, the stunning architectural features, and the history of the State Capitol building attract the attention of the visitors. The observation deck of this building offers great views of the Rock Mountains, Denver, and the surrounding plains. Admission to the building is free for all. Guided tours of the impressive House and Senate Chambers are also made available. The Colorado State Capitol building is the best place to visit if you are interested in knowing facts about Denver’s local history and important historical figures.
