The Denver Art Museum, situated in the Civic Center neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, is well known for its extraordinary collection of American Indian Art. This comprehensive collection comprises of over 55,000 art works from all over the world. The Museum was established in 1893 and was formerly known as the Denver Art Association. It was renamed as the Denver Art Museum in 1932. However, it was moved to its present location, in Morgan Wing, in the year 1954. The current 24-sided, 7-storey building of the Museum was designed by James Sudler and Gio Ponti. The major landmark near the Museum is the Denver Public Library.

The Denver Art Museum houses as many as 8 curatorial departments: Asian Art; native arts (American Indian, Oceanic, and African); architecture, design & graphics; textile art; Asian art; modern and contemporary; painting & sculpture (European and American); New World (pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial); and Western art. The Architecture, Design & Graphics Department holds a large collection of changing exhibits featuring pre-1900 American and European decorative arts. These exhibits are displayed in the 6th floor gallery while the 20th century design galleries are on the second floor. The Asian Art Department, on the other hand, has 4 main galleries that draw attention to the arts of China, India, Southwest Asia, and Japan. The Department also features additional galleries that offer works from Nepal, Tibet, and Southeast Asia. Religious art and traditional folk crafts are displayed in the thematic galleries.

The Museum’s modern and contemporary collection of the 20th century art comprises of more than 4,500 works of both emerging and internationally acclaimed artists. The most impressive collection is the Herbert Bayer Collection of over 2, 500 works by renowned artists. This collection is an important Bauhaus scholarly and artistic resource. Another major attraction in the Museum is Linda, a life-size replica of a sleeping woman, made by artist John De Andrea. The Museum also holds an internationally acclaimed collection of Native American Indian Art, which comprises of more than 16,000 works describing over 100 tribes across North America. Other main collections in the Museum include the oceanic collection, the African collection, the New World Collection, the Pre-Columbian Collection, the Berger Collection, and the Spanish Colonial Collection.

Besides, a number of family-friendly programs such as Eye Spy gallery games, Kids Corner, Family Backpacks, Just for Fun Family Center, and the Discovery Library are also hosted by the Education Department of the Museum. Denver Art Museum, a non-profit organization, is funded mainly by a 0.1% sales tax levied in the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. This Museum attracts nearly 465,000 visitors every year and is a great learning experience for all.
