The Denver Zoo, situated in City Park of Denver, Colorado, is the most popular paid attraction in the City. It encompasses an area of nearly 80 acres (0.32 sq-km) and is owned and managed by the City and County of Denver. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Denver Zoo is mainly funded by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. It was established by Alexander J. Graham in 1896. The first animal in the Zoo was an orphaned American Black Bear cub named Billy Bryan.
The Denver Zoo is home to species from all over the world, including carnivorous mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, pachyderms, and hoofed mammals. The most commonly found animals in the Zoo include native prairie dogs, native waterfowl, antelope, Chinese Pheasants, and red squirrels. The most impressive exhibit at the Zoo is the ‘Bear Mountain’. This historic exhibit was established in the year 1918 and is also considered to be North America’s first natural-style zoo exhibit. It houses Asiatic Black Bears, coati, and Grizzly bears. It has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Another major exhibit at the Denver Zoo is the ‘Monkey Island’, opened in 1937. The ‘Bird World’ is home to a wide variety of exotic birds and the ‘Northern Shores’ exhibit features several species, including pinnipeds and polar bears. Other major exhibits at the Zoo include the Predator Ridge, Tropical Discovery, Primate Panorama, and Asian Tropics. The Tropical Discovery building, established in 1993, houses a number of aquaria and several amphibians, mammals, and reptiles. Predator Ridge, on the other hand, is a huge exhibit that depicts the African Savanna.
Other facilities at the Zoo include the Children’s Zoo, Feline House, Mountain Sheep Habitat, Pachyderm Habitat, Bird World, Giraffe House, and Wolf Pack Woods. The Gates Center and Wild Encounters Outdoor Amphitheater features a number of educational programs for kids and adults. The Denver Zoo is a great learning experience, especially for kids.
