The city of Denver is situated in the South Platte River Valley, nearly 15 miles () east of the Front Range of the Southern Rocky Mountains. It is the most populous and the capital city of Colorado. Owing to its elevation of exactly one mile (1.6 km) above the sea level, it is often nicknamed as the “Mile High City”. The Denver City was established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, in 1858. It has made a significant contribution to the agricultural industry in the past due to which it has been historically named as the “Queen City of the Plains”. Denver is bordered by the Rocky Mountains on the east and the High Plains on the west. Therefore, it observes a semi-arid steppe climate with 4 different seasons.
Denver has as many as 79 official neighborhoods, most of which contain parks and other points of tourist interest. The historic and stylish LoDo (Lower Downtown) is a part of the Union Station neighborhood. Capitol Hill, Washington Park, Highland, and Uptown are included in the North Capitol Hill Neighborhood. Other popular features in the city’s neighborhoods include the Curtis Park in the Five Points neighborhood; Park Hill; Alamo Placita in the Speer neighborhood; and the Golden Triangle in Civic Center. Today, Denver is home to over 200 parks and 29 recreation centers that are built to provide recreation and relaxation to the residents of Colorado. The most frequented park in the City is the giant 314 acre (1.27 sq-km) City Park. Besides, the City has also acquired 14,000 acres (56.7 sq-km) of mountain parks. The most famous mountain park is the Red Rocks Park, which is known for its Red Rocks Amphitheater. The world-class Winter Park Ski Resort is also owned by the City of Denver.
Denver, served by 2 interstate highways I-25 and I-70, is also known for its culture and heritage. The major attractions in and around the City include Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Denver Art Museum, Colorado State Capitol Building, Colorado Art Museum, Denver Mint, Molly Brown Museum House, and the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center. The Larimer Square and the LoDo neighborhood are also filled with a number of famous art galleries, clubs, bars, and restaurants. Denver is also known for folk music. It also manages to have an active jazz, pop, jam, folk and classical music scene. The City has a lot to offer and is also a great place to visit during vacations.
