The Molly Brown House, situated in Denver, Colorado, was the home of the famous American activist, socialite, and philanthropist, Margaret Brown. She was popularly known as “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” as she was among those who survived the sinking of RMS Titanic. Today, this magnificent home houses a museum that presents numerous exhibits, which illustrate Margaret’s life as well as the history of Victorian Denver and its architectural preservation.
The Molly Brown House was established by William Lang in 1880s, incorporating the unique Queen Anne Style, refined neo-classical, and Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. This historical house was formerly owned by Mary Large and Isaac, who sold the house in 1893 to James Joseph Brown, husband of Margaret Brown. Upon Margaret’s death in 1932, the house was sold and was renovated a number of times after that. This beautiful Victorian home was almost demolished when Historic Denver Inc. started to make grass root efforts to save the historic treasure from annihilation. The house was finally restored to its original grandeur through architectural research and microscopic paint analysis. Currently, the Molly Brown House is a well-established museum that attracts over 40,000 visitors every year.
The Molly Brown House Museum holds a huge collection of all the artifacts that belonged to Margaret Tobin brown. These artifacts include photographs, crystal work, art work, china, silver, textiles, and furniture. The style of the displayed objects range from the typical Victorian decoration to an exclusive description of Margaret's far-reaching world travels and assorted taste. The Museum also houses a wide-ranging fashion collection illustrating the years of Margaret's life - 1867-1932. This collection comprises of children’s and infant’s clothing, men’s wear, women’s wear, and a range of beautiful accessories. However, all these objects are solely for exhibit purposes and are preserved by the Museum.
The Museum also houses a Museum Store. This Store sells books and informative videos about Molly Brown; newspapers that report the sinking of titanic; T-Shirts; souvenir items like magnets, paperweights, holiday ornaments, and note cards; and children’s items like Titanic-related and Victorian era toys and games. The Molly Brown House has been wonderfully restored with the help of photographs of the house, which were apparently taken by Margaret in 1910. This House is a historic and architectural gem, and is certainly worth a visit.
