Canon City

Canon City is the most populous city of Fremont County, Colorado, United States. It bestrides the famous Arkansas River and is well known for being the site of four federal and 9 state prisons. The City is also a well-liked tourist destination for rock climbing and Whitewater rafting. Founded in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Canon City was formerly the main commercial center for gold miners.

The major tourist attractions in the City include the Colorado State Penitentiary, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, the Royal Gorge Bridge, Buckskin Joe, and The Owl, a local eatery converted from turn-of-the-century cigar shop. The historic and scenic Royal Gorge Route Railroad is considered to be the most fascinating scenic railroad in the world. Another point of tourist interest is the Dinosaur Depot. This interpretive museum offers a Jurassic Park-like adventure.

The downtown area of Canon City is known for its early 1900’s architecture and has been listed on the National Historical Register. The old-fashioned and appealing atmosphere of the downtown area calls for a shopping trip to visit the local boutiques and merchants. Visitors can obtain the downtown walking tour guide of the historical district from the local Chamber of Commerce. This guide has all the historical information related to each building registered. Downtown Cañon City has been well conserved over the years and today, it is the largest historical district in Colorado.
