Cave of the Winds

cave of the winds

Cave of the Winds is a cave situated in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado, just above the historic Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings on US Highway 24. This cave was discovered by two young brothers, George and John Pickett in the late 1800s.Ā  According to an early legend of the Jicarilla Apaches, the Great Spirit of the Wind resided in this cave and hence, it is known as the Cave of the Winds. It is at this place that adventure and geology merge together. This cave is a unique GeoVenture and one of the most fascinating show caves in America. The temperature in the cave is just 54oF. The magnificent wonders of the underground world have been attracting visitors to the Cave of Winds for over a century. One can venture through this wonderful cave by foot, carriage, horse, car, or RV. Walking tours through the cave are offered daily.

The major attraction in the Cave is the Silent Splendor Room. This Room, discovered in the year 1984, is known for its rare crystalline speleothems. If you are planning to experience this Geoventure, it is advisable to wear comfortable clothing like shorts, jeans, skirt, etc. It is also a good idea to wear sneakers or hiking shoes and a light jacket. However, owing to several narrow passages and over 200 stairs in the cave, baby backpacks and strollers are not allowed inside the cave. Pets are not allowed in the area. Besides, wheelchair access is made available only in the gift shop, restrooms, and the visitor center. It is also not advisable for people with heart or respiratory problems to go underground in this cave. There are also several hotels and campgrounds nearby. Cave of the Winds is an amazing historic wonder and is a ā€œmust seeā€ when you plan your next visit to Colorado Springs.
