Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, situated in Colorado Springs, is housed in the El Paso County Courthouse. This Courthouse was established in the year 1903 and has been restored. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum aims at preserving the history of the Pikes Peak region. The main collections in the Museum include Van Briggle art pottery, a nationally-significant quilt collection, and the finest regional art collection of Colorado. The major attractions in the Museum are the wall paintings by Eric Bransby. These murals reflect the history from early inhabitants to the 20th century.
The Pioneer Museum also houses a portion of the reconstructed house of the famous author, Helen Hunt Jackson. This house has been furnished with some of her original possessions. Helen Hunt wrote a number of books such as "Ramona" and "The Indian's Plight". These books highlighted the condition of the American Indians. Reservations are not required to visit the Museum and admission is free for all. The Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum is located at the Southern edge of Downtown and can be reached by driving east from the Cimarron Street (Highway 24), and then, turning left on Tejon Street. If you are particularly interested in the area’s history, this Museum is the best place for you.
