The city of Colorado Springs, situated 61 miles (98 km) south of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver, is the second most populous city in the State of Colorado and the county seat of the El Paso County, Colorado. This magnificent city is nestled at the base of Pikes Peak, one of the most popular mountains in America, located to the east of the Southern Rocky Mountains. Colorado Springs was established in the year 1871 by General William Palmer. The City offers a number of recreational activities and tourist attractions. At present, it has several features of a modern urban area, such as bike trails, public parks, theatres, business and commerce, and other sources of entertainment. A major tourist attraction in the City of Colorado Springs is the Garden of Gods, a public park well-known for its conglomerate sandstone hogback formations. The city has been named after the color of these towering red rock formations. Another popular site in the City is the Pikes Peak that offers breathtaking views of the Manitou Springs, Colorado. Hot Springs Pool, situated in the city, is the largest year-round pool in the whole world. The City has 300 days of sunshine, mild winters, and average rainfall.
The oldest part of the City is the Colorado Springs Downtown, founded by General William Palmer. Several buildings in this area such as the Lon Chaney Theater, the Colorado Springs City Auditorium, etc. are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The famous Michael Garman Galleries and Carnegie Libraries are situated in the Old Colorado City, designated as the National historic District. Other tourist attractions in the city include the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the American Numismatic Association, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Will Rogers Shine of the Sun, Seven falls, Cave of the Winds, Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Pioneers Museum, the World Arena, Flying W Ranch, etc. A number of cultural and recreational events are organized in the city every year. The major events include the Pikes Peak Marathon, the Colorado Balloon Classic, and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
