The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado is a steam-powered, coal-fired 1881 locomotive that offers year-round, exciting train trips through the panoramic San Juan Mountains, spectacular canyons, and wilderness of the 2 million acres (8100 sq-km) of San Juan National Forest. The railroad was inaugurated in July, 1882. This 36 inch (91.44 cm) track was built by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in order to transport the gold and silver ore mined in the San Juan Mountains. Today, the Railroad offers daily service to Silverton from May through October. Trains to the Cascade Canyon run daily from November through early May.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is also considered to be one among the top 10 most exciting train journeys in the world. Every train provides world-class bathroom facilities in each coach, snack bar, and beverages. Various services provided by the D&SNGR include the Bus-Train Combo, the Bench-style Inside Coach Seating, first-class Parlor Car Service, and Open-Air Gondola Seating. Open-car Gondola Cars have open sides to provide stunning views of the surrounding Mountains.
The Railroad Museum is situated in the Durango Yard. It features a number of exhibits that illustrate the history of this historic railroad. The D&SNG Railroad and Museum are designated as National Historic Landmarks and are a “must-see” during your stay at Durango, Colorado.
