The City of Durango is the most populous city and the county seat of the La Plata County in Colorado. This town was established by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in September 1880 in order to serve the San Juan Mining District. The name of the City is derived from the Basque word “Urango”, meaning ‘the water town’.

This historic city is situated in the Animas River Valley, at an elevation of 6522 feet (1988 m) and is surrounded by the panoramic San Juan Mountains. The Animas River, also known as the River of Lost Souls, flows through the downtown and is well known for canoeing, whitewater rafting, and kayaking. Durango is also considered to be an outdoor activity paradise. The most popular recreational activities in the City include off-roading, road biking, hunting, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, year-round fishing, rafting, kayaking, and golfing.

Durango is home to 5 major ski areas. The most popular among these ski resorts is the Durango Mountain Resort at Purgatory. A major tourist attraction near the City is the Mesa Verde National Park. This Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well known for the spectacular Ancestral Puebloan Cliff Dwellings. Another major historical attraction in Durango is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
