Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine

mollie kathleen gold mine tour sign

The famous Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine is located in the historic City of Cripple Creek, Colorado. This gold mine was discovered by Mollie Kathleen Gortner on September 9th, 1891. Mollie was, in fact, the first woman in the goldmine camp to strike a gold mine in her own name. This mine is the only 1000 ft (300 m) vertical shaft gold mine in the country. It has been offering free guided tours to the visitors for more than 50 years. These tours, led by a real gold miner, take the visitors to an authentic gold mine where they can relive the history of Cripple Creek and experience what life and work were like for the Hard Rock Miners of the Old West.

The Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tour is certainly one of the country’s most enthralling, unique, and educational mining adventures. A man-skip elevator takes the visitors down into the fully lighted 1000 ft (304.8 m) mine shaft. As the visitors arrive on the tenth level mine workings, they can explore historic drifts, winze, crosscut, and stope workings that feature gold vein structures of the Mollie Kathleen Mine. The tour area is well lighted, slow pace, and flat walking, and is designed fun for the entire family.
This historic mine workings display artifacts and ancient mining tools left behind by the early day miners. These ancient equipments have been restored and are maintained in an operating condition. The major attraction in the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine is its exciting train-ride. This man-trip train car is pulled by an air powered mine locomotive.

All the mine hoisting equipment, shaft, man-skip elevator, as well as underground tour areas are regularly inspected by the Colorado Department of Mine Safety. These equipments are also inspected daily by the Mollie Kathleen Mine Staff in order to ensure public safety. This fascinating gold mine tour is world’s longest continually operating gold mine tour. The historic Mollie Kathleen Mine is respected first as a true treasure of the Gold Mining past and second, as a mine tour attraction.
