The San Juan Skyway can be appropriately called as the "road to the sky". It is the most scenic byway in the world and forms a 236 mile (380 km) great loop in the southwest part of Colorado. It offers breathtaking views of the panoramic 14,000-ft (4,267 m) San Juan Mountains. It also provides views of the rolling hillsides speckled with ancient Indian pueblo remains. The San Juan Skyway offers the visitors a great opportunity to discover history of the streets, gold mines, and railway stations of towns like Silverton, Durango, and Telluride.
The Byway starts in Durango and follows the U.S. Highway 160. It continues through the town of Mancos and leads to Cortez, passing the entrance of the famous Mesa Verde National Park. At Cortez, the byway follows Colorado State Highway 145 and the Dolores River into the San Juan National Forest. The Skyway includes 5 million acres of the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests. It is also well known for its rugged terrain and sheer cliffs that offer one of the most spectacular scenery on planet earth. The San Juan Skyway guarantees a perfect holiday for all any time of the year.
The scenic byway passes through several points of tourist interest such as the Lizard Head Pass, Ophir Loop, San Miguel River, town of Placerville, Dallas Divide on the Colorado Highway 62, Ouray, etc. Thousands of visitors gather on the byway every year for jazz, bluegrass, folk, and film festivals. The favorite recreational activities include skiing, four-wheeling, kayaking, bicycling, dirt-biking, solitary backpacking, fishing, hunting, photography, and motorcycle touring. Besides, the towns also feature a number of shops, historic hot springs, campgrounds, and a Victorian lodge. The San Juan Skyway, a playground in the sky, promises a fiesta for one and all.
