The University of Colorado, situated in Boulder, Colorado, is considered to be one of the Public Ivies, and is ranked as the 34th best public University in the nation. The main campus of the University, situated just one mile (1.6 km) south of the famous Pearl Street Mall, comprises of a number of academic, research, and residential buildings. The athletic fields and other main research buildings are located on the East Campus, nearly a quarter mile (0.4 km) from the main Campus. The Campus is bordered by “The Hill” in the west. The Hill is centrally located, and is situated in close proximity to the Campus. It is not only a prime real estate for students but also a central location for bars, shops, and restaurants.
The University of Colorado-Boulder, located at the foot of the Flatirons, is thought to have the most beautiful campus in the Nation owing to its unique Tuscan architecture. The Campus was designed by Charles Z. Klauder. His design has a classical feel that is most suitable for a Western University. The main features of this style are the multi-leveled roofs of red tile and rough, textured walls. The Norlin Library of CU-Boulder is one among the largest libraries in the nation. At present, it holds nearly 5 million volumes. Another major building on the Campus is the Macky Auditorium, built in 1923. This magnificent building, constructed in the Neo-Gothic style, has two large towers and extensive ivy. The Auditorium is host to several plays, talks, and musical performances by the Artist Series, the Boulder Philharmonic, and the CU Opera. It also houses an art gallery, the Choral department, and the Jazz Studies Department of the College of Music.
The University Memorial Center is yet another important landmark on the University Campus. It is an informal gathering place featuring a food court, a small bowling alley, Club 156, and pool tables. The Mary Rippon Theatre, named after Professor Mary Rippon, hosts the popular Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Besides, CU-Boulder also houses a number of art galleries and museums. These include the CU Art Museum, the UMC Art Gallery, the University Of Colorado Museum Of Natural History, the CU Heritage Center, the Andrew J. Macky Gallery, and the Fiske Planetarium and Science Center. At present, the University offers nearly 3400 courses in more than 150 disciplines. The main organizations that run in affiliation with the University include the Hiking Club, the Buff Bus, Radio 1190, Boulder Free ride, The Herd, and the Program Council. The University of Colorado is not only one of the best academic institutions in the nation but is also one of the major tourist attractions in Colorado.
