The historic city of Leadville, nicknamed as ‘The Two Mile High City’, is the highest city in the United States. It is nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, near the headwaters of the spectacular Arkansas River. Leadville is surrounded by snow-capped peaks. This city, together with Twin Lakes, is not like the other crowded ski resorts. It is a charming, old-fashioned, historic mining town rich in culture, history, natural beauty, and recreation.
The Leadville Ski area offers downhill skiing and snowboarding for families. It also offers opportunities for extreme alpine cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Leadville is an authentic winter paradise. The most popular ski resort in Leadville is the Ski Cooper Resort, which encompasses an area of nearly 400 acres (1.6 sq. km.) and offers a maximum vertical drop of 1200 ft (370 m). This resort is an affordable family area known for its friendly atmosphere, diversified terrain, and good service. It also features a snowboard park and skiing opportunities for beginners as well as for expert skiers.
30% of the slopes are suitable for beginners; 40% terrain is designated as ‘intermediate’ and the remaining 30% as ‘advanced’. A number of trails for cross-country skiing are offered at the Piney Creek Nordic Center. A major attraction at the Resort is the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse where visitors love to enjoy a delicious meal after a guided snowshoe or a cross country ski. Yet another attraction is the Chicago Ridge Backcountry Ski Tour based out of the Ski Cooper Resort Area. The nearest Ski Resort is merely 10 miles (16.1 km) from the town. A 45 minute scenic drive connects the town to the popular Breckenridge and Vail Ski Resorts.
