The Vail Ski Resort is situated just next to the town of Vail, in Eagle County, Colorado. It was established in 1962 by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton and was named after Charles Vail. Vail Ski Resort, the largest single mountain resort in the U. S., is owned and managed by Vail Resorts. This premier winter destination features over 5,164 acres (20.9 sq-km) of excellent terrain with 34 lifts, 193 trails, 4 terrain parks, and 7 bowls. 18% of the trails are for the beginners while 53 % trails are designated as ‘advance/expert’. The lifts at the Resort include one Gondola, 16 high-speed Quads, one fixed-grip quad, 2 triple chairs, 5 double chairs, and 10 surface lifts.
The Resort also provides great opportunities for snowboarders. The Golden Peak Half pipes and Park is over 15 ft (4.57 m) deep and has as many as 17 foot transitions. The Vail Mountain is divided into three main sections: the Blue Sky Basin, the Front-Side, and the Back Bowls. Most of the terrain in the Back Bowls is difficult and is not suited to the beginners. The Front Side, on the other hand, is perfect for those who are new to the sport as 28% of the terrain in this area is classified as ‘easiest’. Blue Sky Basin has intermediate terrain. The Vail Resort observes an average annual snowfall of 346 inches (878.8 cm). Vail is the most celebrated mountain in Colorado, and is worth a visit if you are interested in free skiing or snowboarding.
