Fort LauderdaleFort Lauderdale, situated in the Broward County, Florida, is a very popular tourist destination, featuring more than 4100 restaurants, beaches, and nearly 120 nightclubs. It is also considered as a major yachting center, with nearly 100 marinas and boats and over 42,000 resident yachts. Over the years, the city has also emerged as the top gay resort area in America. Also referred to as the ‘Venice of America’, Fort Lauderdale attracts over 10 million visitors every year. Three forts, together called Fort Lauderdale, were built by the United States during the Second Seminole War; the first was at the fork of the New River, the second in the Sailboat Bend neighborhood, and the third near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina. These forts were named after Major William Lauderdale, the commander of the soldiers who constructed the first fort. Today, the city of Fort Lauderdale is best known for its arts and entertainment district, which runs east-west along La Olas Boulevard. The major tourist attraction in this district is the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The intersection of Las Olas and A1A is referred to as ‘ground zero’ of the beautiful Fort Lauderdale Beach. The city also hosts Langerado, a popular music festival, every year. Fort Lauderdale is also home to over 7 miles (11.26 km) of beautiful beaches, which offer visitors and residents great opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and enjoyment. The City’s award-winning wave-wall and signature beachfront promenade features a number of restaurants, entertainment venues, sidewalk cafes, and shops. The major recreational activities offered at the Fort Lauderdale Beach include wind surfing, boating, volleyball, scuba diving, rollerblading, jet skiing, boating, snorkeling, and deep sea fishing. The main annual festivals hosted by the Fort Lauderdale Beach include the 4th of July Family Celebration, McDonald’s Air and Sea Show, and Greater Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Other major tourist attractions in the City include Old Fort Lauderdale, Stranahan House, Riverwalk, Port Everglades, and the Museum of Art.
